The most accessible location is on the driver's side dashboard. Stand outside the vehicle near the driver's windshield wiper and look through the lower-left corner of the windshield glass. You will see a small metal plate stamped with the 17 characters.
2. Driver-Side B-Pillar / Door Jamb Certification Sticker
Open the driver's front door and inspect the door jamb (the vertical pillar between front and rear seats). Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards require a safety certification sticker containing:
- Full 17-digit VIN (often alongside a scannable Code 39 or Code 128 barcode)
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
- Tire pressure specifications
- Production date (Month/Year)
3. Under the Hood: Engine Block Firewall
On older or European vehicles, the VIN is stamped into the metal firewall separating the engine bay from the passenger compartment, or on the front passenger-side strut tower.
4. State Vehicle Registration Card
Your annual Department of Motor Vehicles registration certificate prominently lists the VIN alongside your license plate number and expiration date.
5. Auto Insurance Policy Documents & Digital Card
Your insurance provider's mobile app or physical proof-of-insurance card lists the VIN to ensure policy coverage matches the exact insured chassis.
6. Vehicle Title Document
The official Certificate of Title lists the VIN as the primary legal proof of ownership.
